From 1927, when the first motorcycles raced through the pathways of Crystal Palace Park, to 1972, when the race circuit on which so many epic battles had been fought echoed to the sound of high-revving engines for the last time, motorsport on two, three and four wheels took place in the heart of South-East London. The venue also introduced new forms of motor sport such as speedway and cinders racing to the public, along with Midget car racing in the 1930s, but this failed due to poor spectator support. The post war period with a shorter but faster circuit, allowed fresh forms to racing a great opportunity, with the likes of the 500cc class with the Cooper 500s, and slightly later on, Saloon car racing. The big boys also came out to play in the International events held, such as Mike Hawthorn and the 250F Maserati. Motor cycle sport with such riders as John Surtees and machines such as the Norton and MV Agusta also provided popular viewing. Phillip Parfitt was one of many thousands of enthusiasts who travelled regularly to this unlikely motorsports setting to enjoy its unique atmosphere, savour its special brand of racing and ultimately to mourn its loss. This is his nostalgic story of racing at Crystal Palace.
