Today, in the 21st century, Phillip Island is established as one of the world's premiere motor sport venues — a circuit that seems to bring out the very best in every type of racing on two, three or four wheels. But the fact that the complex even exists today is due to an incredible saga that began on the dusty, pot-holed streets around the island's main town of Cowes in 1928. From the early 1950s, countless volunteers laboured weekend after weekend to hack the now-famous permanent circuit out of the bush and build the primitive infrastructure that allowed racing to commence in December 1956. On at least three occasions since then, it appeared that the circuit had run its last race, but each time, and under differing circumstances, it bounced back. The Phillip Island of today, whilst boasting ultra-modern and continually improving facilities, is a throwback to the grand old circuits of yesteryear. Only two corners have been altered from the original layout and there are none of the ugly chicanes that blight so many once-great tracks worldwide. Home to the Australian Grand Prix from 1928 to 1935, this event is covered in a year by year summary, with competition cars such as racing Grand Prix Bugattis , Front Wheel drive Alvis models as well as MGs. Motor cycle racing has played a major role in the life of the circuit, in both prewar and postwar eras; covered are the years 1928 to 1940 including results for the Victorian TT, Australian GP and Australia TT, with riders such as Harry Hinton, winner of the 1933 Junior TT on a Norton. The years 1957-1963 brought along raiders such as Tom Phillis, Eric Hinton, Bob Brown, and the late 1960s to late 1970’s saw the side car teams such as Stan Bayliss and Malcolm Byrne competing and events such as the 1969 Australian Grand Prix taking place, which is covered up to 2004 and World Superbike Championship from 1990 to 2005. The rebirth in the post war period also saw the return of cars in competition with the like of Murray Rainey in his Cooper Norton and Hoot Gibson’s homemade 5.4 Litre Cadillac Special, Stan Jones with his 250F Maserati which is covered in the 1957 to 1963 chapter. Catering for various types of events, there was the running of the Armstrong 500 during 1960-62, covering 500 miles. The race offered the chance of a more endurance based competition, and brought in a variety of entries from Vauxhall Cresta to the humble NSU Prinz. One of the major lifelines to the circuit was the support of Len Lukey, to which a chapter is dedicated to his history, before continuing with car racing in the 1967-78 period – the big bangers, and Formula 5000 events, and on to more modern times with touring car racing. This book is dedicated to those who have helped to contribute to the legend of Phillip Island over three-quarters of a century; not just the competitors, but the unsung heroes who's untiring efforts have brought us one of the greatest motor sports shows on earth.
