Road racing had been particularly popular in Italy, but in 1973 the Targa Florio ended, and with it a whole tradition of European events. In Argentina road racing survives, but even there the great races have passed: the stock cars no longer compete in the Buenos Aires—Lima—Buenos Aires race that made Juan Manuel Fangio famous, or in the Buenos Aires—Caracas race that killed his best friend. Today top American and European drivers no longer meet for the Carrera Panamericana de Mexico, which was banned after eight people were killed during the 1954 race. This is the story of the great road races: both the classics, like the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio, and the less well-known but equally fascinating races such as the Coppa Dolomiti and the Giro dell'Umbria. It tells of world famous drivers: Moss, Fangio, Ascari, Nuvolari, Nazzaro, and the brothers Galvez, who became household names; and also of the great drivers whose names are beginning to fade: Biondetti, Trips, Collins, Marzotto, Kling, Bracco and Minoia. Road racing was one of the toughest and most demanding of all sports. The classic races tested both cars and drivers to the limit and generated an excitement of a quite different kind from that seen in modern circuit racing, fostering feuds that simmered during the long hours of gruelling driving and friendships that miraculously survived the rigours of the road. For many motor racing enthusiasts, Chris Jones's tautly written and superbly illustrated book will be an eye opener, for others it will bring back memories of an exhilarating and spectacular age of motor racing that for most of us has gone for ever.
