"In those days, the Ferrari factory was small. In a long assembly hall, there were a few ordinary stands holding three 250GT chassis, none of which was in the same state of build. One was a beautiful white Cabriolet Series 1. It was one of the very first Pininfarina Cabriolets and it looked stunning!" These were the reactions of young Scottish motor journalist Graham Gauld, when he made his first visit to the Ferrari works in 1957. Tired of reading secondhand accounts of the great cars produced in the quiet Italian city of Modena, Gauld set out to visit the factories of Ferrari, Maserati, OSCA, and Stanguellini. Modena Racing Memories: Italian Sports Car & Grand Prix Racing 1957-1963 is Gauld's account of his first and subsequent visits to the city and its legendary automakers. His candid conversations with motoring greats such as Enzo Ferrari, Francesco Stanguellini, Sergio Scaglietti, Adolfo Orsi, and Romolo Tavoni paint a behind-the-scenes picture of the engineering, building, and racing of some of the world's greatest automobiles. The young photojournalist's Leicas and Canons recorded Maserati "Birdcages" and Ferrari GTOs in various stages of completion. Gauld's trips to Modena coincided with the annual Grand Prix at the city's airport. Swamping the Autodromo, thousands of spectators came to see the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, Jo Bonnier, Colin Davis, Stirling Moss, and Phil Hill mix it up on the one-mile circuit. Gauld was there, and his pictures and stories will make you feel like you were, too! Also touched upon is the more modern life of car production around Modena, with a look at the Romano Artioli and the Bugatti EB110, which like the Gauld’s coverage of Carlo Chiti and the ATS GT, tells the story of a car which came and went, in a short space of time. More than 170 illustrations both black and white and colour, enliven an era when racing red was dominant!
