This book is the accumulation of more than two decades devoted to interviews and research, which offers a thorough analysis of one of the world’s most important motoring events. It is written by one of the most renowned Italian historians of the automobile Luigi Orsini, already the author of works on such marques as Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati. Covering the history of this famous race from the inaugural event in 1927 to 1957. During the pre war period it was predominantly Alfa Romeo which was the most competitive, though the likes of Mercedes Benz, Delahaye, MG, Aston Martin and BMW also came to compete in the event. The early post war era saw the event back in operation in 1947, with Alfa Romeo domination back on line, but now with the likes of Ferrari, Maserati and Mercedes Benz who gained their phenomenal success in 1955 with Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson winning the event in 10h 07m 48s at an average of 98.53mph. It should also be remembered that the likes of the humble Fiat 500 also entered, along with the occasional Isetta bubble car. There are over 400 largely unpublished photographs selected and reproduced to provide unprecedented imagery, based on the original negatives from the archives of such people as Ferruccio Testi, Odoardo Gandolfi and Nerino Zagari. A 100 page appendix catalogues the cars and drivers which have run in each event and help complete this standard reference work for period event coverage.
