Thousand Mile Trial

At the end of 1899 in Britain there were large number s of people who had never seen a motor car, a even greater number believed that would never be a commercial or practical success. In the hope of enlightening the public the Automobile Club decided that an extensive demonstration trial should be held in the spring of 1900. This book tells the story of this bold plan, which with hindsight we can see as the start of the British Motor Industry. The story is told using reports and photographs of the day, some previously unpublished. It examines those motoring pioneers achieved; bringing an awareness which over the last 100 years has resulted in social changes that have enriched everyday life more than previously could be imagined.
