This book is a detailed study of the history of the Alvis Car Company during their formative years in the ‘twenties’ and of their products up to 1932. During this period Alvis produced not only one of the most famous and popular sports cars of all time, the immortal 12/50, but also highly original and technically advanced supercharged Grand Prix and Sports cars, the latter featuring all-independent suspension as early as 1928. The publication contains copious photographs and line drawings with a wide range of factual and descriptive information. Not only did Hull & Johnson examine every available motoring periodical of the period concerned, but they interviewed people closely connected with the design, sales and racing of the vintage Alvis. Famous personalities are described, such as the ill fated Major Maurice Harvey, and there is full treatment of notable events in which Alvis cars took part – in particular the Georges Boillot Cup races – along with details of rival cars and drivers. Owners of vintage Alvis models will find valuable practical information in the appendices, with topics including maintenance, tuning the 12/50 and 12/60. A register of surviving examples known at the time to the Alvis Register is also printed.
