Here then for the first time is the detailed history of Lancia Racing. Their story begins in the early years of the twentieth century when Vincenzo Lancia, who had played an important part in the formation of Fiat and was one of the great drivers of the time, formed a partnership with Ugo Fogolin. From this foundation in 1906, Lancia became a powerful force in motorsport right through to the late 1980s. During those many years Lancia's path to prosperity has not altogether been smooth, though their impetus increased when Gianni Lancia assumed control in 1948. Gianni was obsessed with racing and the new V6 Aurelia took them along the road to success with wins in many European races including the Mille Miglia and Le Mans. Unfortunately the success of models like the D20 and D23 was all too soon overshadowed by the untimely death of Alberto Ascari in the D5O Formula One car at Monza. The racing cars were given to Ferrari and it would be ten years before Lancia returned to the track. They actually re-entered international competition with the HF Fulvia rally car. This proved so successful that it enabled Lancia to develop a Bertone concept car into the all-conquering Stratos of the mid 1970s. Fiat's policy of using motor sport to promote production cars dictated that the next Lancia to be campaigned would be the Monte Carlo. Endurance sports car racing was now the name of the game and their efforts culminated in World Championship victories in both 1980 and 1981. Following this, rule changes within that sport meant that by 1982 Lancia's struggles with Porsche were becoming increasingly unrewarding and the emphasis shifted to rallying. Once again they became a dominant force, this time with their 037 Rally and then the supercharged and turbocharged Delta S4, until the tragic death of driver Henri Toivonen. This meticulously researched book, with a great focus on the postwar period, contains 200 photographs, and is the first full account of Lancia's racing efforts. It covers a period of competitive achievement which has been nothing short of phenomenal, when almost every effort Lancia made has resulted in ultimate success.
