In this book Lt.Col. A. T. G. Gardner, O.B.E., M.C. or Goldie Gardner as he is known to many, describes the early days of his motor racing career, which began in 1926 in one of the first Gordon England Austin Sevens. He followed this with a Salmson both at Brooklands and abroad and migrated from that to Amilcars in 1924 and 1930. In 1931 he began his long association with MGs, driving a Montlhery Midget throughout the season and finishing third in the Irish Grand Prix. In that year also he escaped serious injury in the Ulster T.T. only to suffer seriously in the same race the next year. In 1934 he returned to racing with a K3 Magnette with which he finished third and won his class in the B.R.D.C. 500 Mile Race. The following year he lapped Brooklands at over 120 m.p.h. with the Magnette and from that time onwards his interests appeared to settle with record breaking with great results. Holder of three Gold Stars awarded by the British Racing Drivers' Club and a Vice-President of this Club, Gardner tells of his achievements with modesty, clarity, and a seriousness which serves to emphasise the great work he has done for British prestige.
