Documented for the first time, this is a history on the evolution of each of the four models of Rolls Royce 40/50hp cars: the Silver Ghost, New Phantom (Phantom 1), Phantom 2, and Phantom 3. Particularly careful research has been devoted to the hitherto little known experiential chassis proceeding each model. Each experiential chassis is fully described and many reports of how these cars performed on test in France are included. These reports illustrate the fantastically high standard which the company demanded. The production models are recorded, accompanied by some amusing and incredible stories about individual cars. Also included is the full story of the American built cars and how and why these were born at Springfield, Massachusetts. There are two appendices: the first gives brief details of chassis numbering and selected cars, together with a list of the London Motor Show cars exhibited during the period 1925-1938. The second appendix is devoted almost entirely to Royce and his views of the motor industry, which show the breadth of vision and knowledge seldom ever properly appreciated.
