Alan Brown he drove for the Ecurle Richmond

The 500 cc class of motor racing is peculiarly British. It grew out of necessity. Those things which were not scarce after the war: enthusiasm, determination and resourcefulness, overcame the other shortages, and rather than wait until times were better and things were easier, the chaps who wanted to race motor cars found a way of doing it. So much effort went into early developments with such success that the formula became recognised internationally. In this Year Book the two years 1952 and 1953 are under review - not as one may think 1953-1954 from the title. There are sections which are mainly for reference, but all followers in motor racing will find other sections in the book of real practical interest. There are adverts from manufacturers Kieft, Ferodo, Girling, articles by some of the leading men in their field - names such as Don Parker, British Formula 3 Champion at the end of 1952 and 1953, a guideline as to the ideal 500 by Prof. R.E. von Eberhorst, (co-designer of the Auto Union and designer for Aston Martin), Building and Racing my own 500 by Reg Bicknell and the half litre scene by Bill Body of Motor Sport. The Sport is recorded by a look at Continental racing 1952-1953, with events held at various venues: 1952 -Circuit Bois de la Cambre – Bruxelles, Circuir of Draguignan France, Luxembourg Grand Prix, Eifelrennen – Nurburgring, GP des Frontieres – Chimay, Circuit of Rouen, , GP de Namur – Belguim. Dutch GP – Zandvoort, Grenzlandringrennen Germany, 1953 - Chimay and Agen in France. There are maps and details of British circuits and hill climbs used for events,: Aintree, Brough Aerodrome, Cadwell Park, Charterhall, Davidstow, Ibsley, Oulton Park, Thruston, Shelsley Walsh Hill, An excellent reference to Formula 3, racing car specifications are listed with details of: Arnott MK1, CBP II, Cooper 500, Creamer, Hill JAP, Kent-Smith, Keift, Leprechaun 500, Leston-Special, Revis, Staride, and the Walker Special. There is coverage also on Formula 3 engine specifications: JAP, Matchless G45, Norton, Turner and Formula 2 racing car specifications: Connaught, Cooper-Bristol, and HWM. For readers or researchers, there is a very interesting Who’s Who in International Motor Sport, a Directory of suppliers and manufacturers, and to end the book, provisional dates for 1954 International events, plus 1952 and 1953 British and International results.
