It was coming up to the end of 1939. Enzo Ferrari had just left Alfa Romeo, who had constrained him under contract not to undertake racing activities for at least four years. But it didn't quite go like that. Ferrari immediately began to prepare for a new venture: under the name of Auto Avio Costruzioni, he set about the preparation and production of a new car in his old Scuderia Ferrari premises. It was called the 815 because it was fitted with an 8-cylinder 1.5-litre engine. He built two of them based on Fiat components to be baptised on the 28 April 1940 in the 1st Gran Premio Brescia delle Mille Miglia, with two young and enthusiastic drivers at the wheel along with their co drivers Alberto Ascari – Giovanni Minozzi and Lotario Rangoni Macchiavelli – Enrico Nardi 815 The Genesis of Ferrari offers the story of this remarkable period. With reproduction of original photographs and drawings of the Touring coachwork and correspondence along with technical specification details, the story is told. Also included are copies of the 1940 Mille Miglia regulations issued for the event. There is also a small sideline story that emerges from these early exploits, of machine tool manufacturing, which Ferrari took up in order to allow his fledgling company to survive, and marked them with the badge of the Prancing Horse. There has also been a suggestion that three cars may have been built, for in early 1947 an 8 cylinder 1500cc car with an engine appeared identical to the 815. The background to this car has never been revealed by either Ferrari or Nardi!
