In the last thirty years, only one or two books have been devoted to Formula Junior motor racing. No one as such has ever compiled a book on the entire period of Formula Junior racing in the UK—that is from 1959 until 1963. Bernard Cowdrey has, for some years, relished a desire to fill this gap. It would, however, be beyond the scope of this book to include every Formula Junior racing car ever built, for you would end up with an enormous tome: by the end of 1960, some 100 different types of Formula Junior racing car, worldwide, had appeared—by the end of 1963 this had increased to an excess of 500! The intention of this book therefore is to guide the reader on an A –Z basis, through the main British built cars which competed, such as: Alexis Mk 1, Alexis Mk 3, Bond , Brabham BT2, Brabham BT6, Britannia, Caravelle, Condor , Cooper T52, Cooper T56, Cooper T59, Cooper T67, Deep Sanderson, Elfin, Elva 100, Elva 200, Elva 300, Emeryson, Envoy, ETA , Gemini Mk 2 , Gemini Mk 3A , Gemini Mk 4A, Hillwood, Kieft, Lola Mk 2, Lola Mk 3, Lola Mk 5, Lotus 18, Lotus 20, Lotus 22, Lotus 27, Merlyn Mk 3, Merlyn Mk 5, Moorland, Northstar, Terrier, U2 and Yimkin; and those cars from overseas, which it is felt contributed most to the Formula: Ausper Type 3, Ausper Type 4, Bandini, BMC (USA), Melkus-Wartburg, OSCA, Stanguellini, TCA, and Volpini. All of the above are illustrated and specification details noted; for the other smaller produced marques or unique cars, there are a selection of brief details recorded on various machines. The ‘sport’ of FJ racing is captured in two illustrated chapters; the first looking at period racing at venues like Goodwood in the 1960s and the second with more recent competition use of the cars in the 1980s and 90s. To conclude Cowdrey’s work are compiled significant race results from 1959 to 1963 and two appendixes, a photographic reference and an articles reference index listing cars in period magazines such as Autosport, Motor Racing etc.
