First published in 1989 "Bentley The Silent Sports Car" can be acknowledged as the ‘standard work’ on the Derby Bentley. Based on a fine collection of original coachbuilders’ photographs, the book looks at the development of the Derby Bentley. With a focus on the British coachwork aspect, there are individual sections on the coachbuilders, with tables listing the work of Cockshoot, Freestone and Webb, Hooper, H J Mulliner, Park Ward, Thrupp and Maberly, Vanden Plas, Windovers, along with a selection of blue print drawings also being reproduced. One chapter on the Show Cars gives a breakdown of cars exhibited at the London Motor Shows, both on the Bentley Motors Stand and also individual coachbuilders’ stands. A brief listing of other known show cars exhibited at the Paris, Genève, Brussels & Amsterdam events concluded this coverage. In the chassis table, which forms an integral and important part of the work, details of the cars when new are listed: Chassis Number, Engine Number, Registration, Date, Type of Body, Coachbuilder, First owner. A central colour section of select cars help illustrate the attention to detail of these "Silent Sports Cars".
