Charles Cooper and his son John founded The Cooper Car Company Ltd to build a long and fast developing series of racing cars. They initially produced 500cc racing cars, followed by a series of other cars including the famous 2 litre Cooper Bristols which were campaigned by such teams as Ecurie Richmond. Cooper also produced a small number of sports cars, but it was predominantly the racing and Grand Prix cars that provided the main focus on the business, with success in the 1959-60 season leading to recognition of their achievements, ultimately becoming Formula 1 champions of the world. To many people the Cooper name is also very much associated with the Mini, and a resume of the Mini Cooper history is also covered. Doug Nye for this new edition has unearthed a multitude of fresh information, and some of the most charming personal anecdotes from within the Cooper ‘family’. Perhaps the biggest scoop was the loan of John Cooper’s personal records and photographic albums, plus the company’s chassis books which have been reproduced along with racing records, to produce a 26 chapter book which is a benchmark work on Cooper Cars.
