In 1909 H.F.S. Morgan, the founder of the Morgan Motor Company, constructed his first three-wheeler. The marque was to be produced for over forty years, outliving all its competitors. During this time, it was actively raced, trialled and used for record-breaking, enjoying an outstanding number of successes unequalled by any other cyclecar. In this book, Dr.J.D. Alderson and D.M. Rushton trace its evolution from 1909 to the end of production in 1952, giving details of body designs, annual mechanical improvements and details of the various engines fitted, such as Anzani, Blumfield, JAP, MAG, and Matchless. Modifications were an essential feature in the development of the racing Morgans, and the authors also describe the many specialised versions prepared by private owners, and their impact on the competition scene and also detail speed and distance records held by Morgans 1912-1930. Throughout, first-hand reminiscences of designers, engineers and competitors are interwoven with vivid descriptions of the often arduous trials, races and courses of the period. The book includes a remarkable selection of contemporary and rare photographs, many published here for the first time. Illustrating the various models and the wide range of events in which they competed, these portray all the stages in the development of the racing three-wheeler, from the very first 90 bore JAP-engined machines right through to Cyril Hale's Mark I JAP-engined racer.
